Digital Realty Trust to Integrate Open Compute Designs for Multi-tenant Data Centers

November 11, 2011 — Data center developer Digital Realty Trust announced on Friday it has joined Facebook’s Open Compute project, where it is adapting its multi-tenant data center designs so that customers are able to choose certain elements of the Open Compute designs, according to a report by Data Center Knowledge.

Facebooks Swedish Data Center to Showcase Architecture Design Work

October 28, 2011 — In the same week that Facebook’s Open Compute Project formalized some of its organizational structure at its summit in New York City, the company announced plans for a data center in Lulea, Sweden that will showcase some of the design principles that helped found that project.

Web Host Rackspace to Create OpenStack Foundation in 2012

October 7, 2011 — Rackspace will form a stand-alone non-profit organization to be responsible for OpenStack in 2012, according to an OpenStack blog post on Wednesday. According to the post, the OpenStack Foundation will be responsible for Project Governance and ownership of the OpenStack trademark. This decision will push the development of open source cloud operating system OpenStack forward and marks a major milestone, according to Rackspace

US Government Outlines More Aggressive Data Center Consolidation Strategy

October 7, 2011 — The US government announced on Thursday that it has altered the criteria for data centers eligible for consolidation, and will close more data centers than initially planned, according to a report by GovTech. According to the report, chief information officer Steven VanRoekel said that by 2012, 472 data centers will be closed, a 27 percent increase over the 373 previously announced in July.
